The Default Area Code tab page on the Global Preferences dialog allows you to define an area code that will be automatically inserted whenever you enter a blank phone field in Enter/Modify/Delete Names.

If you not wish to have an area code automatically inserted, leave it blank. However we recommend that you use a default area code and include an area code with your entries. The practice of switching area codes is widespread, and it will be easier to convert your names when and if that happens in your area.
